Mid Devon and Dartmoor Cottages

A holiday to Mid Devon and Dartmoor offers an entirely unique experience from any other region in Devon. An area rich in farming heritage, green pastures meet ancient tors and mystical moorland. If you are looking for some pure escapism, a holiday to lose yourself and get away from the city life, then this is the perfect destination. Pack your walking boots, and don’t forget to bring the dog. Dartmoor is the largest open space in southern England and there are hundreds of trails to walk that crisscross this remote and timeless landscape.

Dartmoor can be explored at any time of year and the changing seasons offer you the chance to glimpse the many different wildlife species, from rare marshland butterflies, woodland birds and wild garlic in the summer to unusual fungi of all different shapes and sizes in the autumn.

If you are bringing your bike then take up the challenge of the Dartmoor Way Cycle Route, a 95 mile-long route which winds it way round the park, encompassing chocolate box villages with welcoming country pubs where you can rest your weary legs and enjoy mouthwatering local dishes and ales.

For the family looking for an adventure packed holiday, take a trip to Adventure Okehampton on the northern fringes of Dartmoor National Park. Open to all age groups and offering over 18 different activities from The Great Oke Abseil, 50 metres of free abseil from the viaduct, to kayaking sessions, raft-building, bushcraft and gorge scrambling.

The unique landscape of this beautiful region attracts many visitors who come to see sites such as Lydford Gorge, located on the western fringe of Dartmoor where you can see the 30-metre Whitelady waterfall and the famous pothole called the Devil’s Cauldron.

Dartmoor also attracts visitors who are keen to visit the area that inspired the writer Michael Morpurgo’s novel War Horse, since made famous through the big screen with much of the filming taking place on the moor. Of course the region inspired many writers, including the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles, which he penned overlooking the moorland from the Duchy Hotel in Princetown.

If you enjoy a tipple of local ale, then Tarka Rail Ale Trail is for you - a 39 mile journey that winds its way through some of the county’s most scenic rural branch lines, stopping along the way for travellers to enjoy a bite to eat and sample the local ales served up at the country pubs that line the route. Starting at the city of Exeter through the market town of Crediton, the line ends in the North at Barnstaple.

Many interesting and pretty villages, where you can browse the shops and visit the local farmers’ markets crammed with succulent mouthwatering goodies, surround the Moor. Tavistock is a great base to explore the region. Voted Best Food and Market Town in the UK, here you will find a fantastic selection of shops and restaurants, and if you are self-catering, some of the finest local produce available. The heart of Devon is foodie heaven and to really enjoy the best of what’s on offer, come in April and visit the Exeter Festival of Food and Drink - a fantastic event where you can sample and purchase the best of what this county has to offer.
