What a beautiful cottage and place to stay! In a lovely wee village just a stone's throw from the town of Tavistock. The property consisted of three bedrooms, two en-suite and a separate bath/shower/toilet for the third room. The house is upside down, very quirky, with the bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs and an open-plan living room/kitchen upstairs. Very tastefully decorated, warm and very comfortable. Highly recommended! The only downside is that it is located in a black spot with no WiFi or telephone signal, but a visit to the wee pub less than a mile away helped there, especially having three kids of a certain age with us!

This is the perfect destination for countryside lovers to discover, where the leisurely pace of life will entice you to stroll along country lanes, enjoy summer picnics in fields, immerse yourself, browsing around interesting market stalls in the nearby town of Tavistock or embrace the wilderness and beauty of Dartmoor. A spacious barn conversion with reverse level arrangement to take full advantage of the countryside views, The Old Shippon is situated on the edge of the pretty village of Lamerton just three miles from the market town of Tavistock. Positioned within the grounds of the owners small holding, this Devon holiday cottage occupies a private position with large, level enclosed south facing garden overlooking paddocks and fields of peacefully grazing sheep. Three attractively furnished bedrooms on the ground floor benefit from two en-suite shower rooms and a separate bathroom. Stairs lead to the spacious open plan living space on the first floor with far reaching views of the surrounding countryside. A sizeable fitted kitchen with large AEG oven and halogen hob, is positioned at the far end of the room with central dining table and lounge, comfortably furnished with suede & leather settees. The barn is within ten minutes walking distance to the nearby village pub the Blacksmith Arms serving great food and 'real ales' and a little further on Tavistock, just 3 miles drive has an excellent choice of pubs, bistros and restaurants. This beautiful area can easily be explored on foot with the windswept slopes of Dartmoor right on the doorstep. A day trip to the beaches of south Devon and Cornwall can be reached within an hours drive, as is the historic city of Plymouth with its Hoe, Barbican and National Marine Aquarium. Guest Reviews

Fantastic family accommodation in a lovely area.

I stayed at the Old Shippon with my wife and our son (15 months) and our good friends with their daughter (27 months) for a week (Saturday-Saturday). This beautifully restored old cattle shed is situated on a quiet farm in the beautiful Devon hills. I've divided my review up into areas:
LOCATION
- easy to find and access each day from days out.
- ideal parking for our 2 cars and space for one more.
- only 4 miles from the lovely market town of Tavistock (including a Morrisons)
- easy access to South Devon, East Cornwall and Dartmoor.
ACCOMODATION
- well-appointed and tastefully decorated throughout.
- upstairs open-plan living space is good for all the family's needs.
- bedrooms are good-sized and come with lots of wardrobe and drawer space.
- the en-suites for the double rooms are useful and have good showers.
- the utility room is a real bonus space for laundry and storage.
- TVs with DVD players in all three bedrooms are very useful too.
- the only negative is there is no WiFi and no 3G phone reception (although it was also nice to have some detox time away from lots of Facebook!)
- the garden is a real asset to the property, offering lots of safely enclosed space for the children to be entertained in.
THINGS TO DO
- the village pub The Blacksmith's Arms is brilliant, good food and excellent atmosphere in the evenings and only a short 10-minute (albeit hilly!) walk away.
- Tavistock is a lovely town with lots of shops, 900-year old market, park, swimming pool.
- the nearest and best beaches are an hour away at Portwrinkle (west of Plymouth), Wembury (east of Plymouth)
- Launceston is only 30 mins away, good to explore with a steam railway that leads to the brilliant New Mills Farm Park - entertainment heaven for children!
- The whole Devon/Cornwall border/Dartmoor area is littered with things to see and do for all ages.

Overall, Debbie and Tim have done a brilliant job restoring this charming barn and presenting it as a smart and clean place to stay in a wonderful part of the country.

Guests, Aug 14

We stayed at the lovely Old Shippon at Easter and can not rate it highly enough.

We had 5 adults and 1 baby and it worked really well.

The cottage was spotless and had everything you could ask for and more for a self catering cottage.

The garden was fantastic (esp for a9 month old crawler) and the sun shone in the evenings so we could make the most of it.

The pub in the village is great as well - I would suggest you book a table as it was very busy the night we went.

The welcome from Debbie was fantastic and they where so friendly throughout our stay with out being intrusive. We have got to see baby goats that where a couple of hours old!

Definitely a place to go back to and no hesitation recommending it to people

Mrs N Ventham

The Old Shippon is a tastefully converted barn and really exceeded my expectations. The welcome tray from Debbie was brilliant and added a very special touch. The bottle of wine was very welcome after a hard days driving.

The accommodation is very spacious with plenty of room for up to six adults and the layout of the kitchen and living area made cooking for everyone really enjoyable. Everything was spotlessly clean and I had everything I needed for self catering purposes. I've stayed in plenty of self catering properties before where even basic utensils haven't been available, however, Debbie has clearly thought of everything.

The garden area is lovely with a troop of goats in a neighbouring enclosure providing a lot of amusement.

The cottage is based in a small village called Lamerton, but it has the one essential a great pub called The Blacksmiths. The food was exceptional and as it's only a mile walk away a great way to spend an evening.

I have already made another booking and can highly recommend for couples or families.

What a wonderful stay!

Just returned from a week at the Old Shippon in Lamerton. The welcome we got from the owner was lovely and the welcome pack of goodies amazing. The Old Shippon is a converted Cow Shed with sleeping accommodation on the ground floor with living space upstairs. As we were three sets of adults, the three bedrooms - two with en-suites and one family bathroom was perfect. Bedrooms were beautifully but simply furnished with good quality linen and lovely big fluffy towels. There was also a utility room with washing machine and freezer on the ground floor. Upstairs was one open plan room with lovely modern kitchen, dining area and comfortable lounge area with TV/DVD. It was lovely and warm - very efficient heating. The owners had decorated the living area for Christmas and there was a selection of games and well stocked bookcase both of which we took full advantage of. There is an enclosed garden which we didn't use due to the time of year but I imagine it would be lovely to sit and eat out there in the summer taking in the views. The village of Lamerton is very pretty and has a great pub which is within walking distance (approx one mile) and serves good food. Tavistock is a short drive away with lots of restaurants, cafes etc, a good market and selection of shops. There is a nice walk along the river Tavy. Calstock - approximately 10 miles away made for a lovely Christmas day walk along the river. As it was Christmas and an opportunity for our family to all be together, we didn't do very much but there looks to be lots to do for all ages.

Happy Guests
