East Devon and The Jurassic Coast Cottages
East Devon is unmistakably one of the most beautiful regions in the South West. The gateway to The Jurassic Coast - a stretch of 30 miles of UNESCO World Heritage Coastline stretching from Exmouth at the mouth of the Exe estuary encompassing traditional seaside towns of Beer, Seaton, Branscombe towards the Dorset border to Lyme Regis.
Exmouth is one of the most picturesque resorts, well known for the water sports activities available particularly Sailing and Wind Surfing. A well-established family seaside resort with its two miles of soft sands; catch a ferry from here along the Jurassic Coast to capture the beautiful landscape from the water. Great for fishermen, you can choose to fish from the beach or take a day trip out to sea on one of the many fishing trips available from the town. Also popular with walkers and particularly cyclists who can enjoy almost 26 almost entirely traffic miles around the Exe Estuary linking Exmouth, Lympstone and Exton with more routes due for completion in the near future. With sensational waterside views across wildlife-rich lagoons the route will appeal to birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts, the area habitat for many rare and endangered species.
Visit the village of Topsham; full of charm and character and famed for its maritime history, it was once a larger port than the capital city Exeter. Make time during your stay in East Devon to visit the city. Visit the ancient Roman ruins and the famous underground passages. Shopping is excellent in the city and your choices of restaurant range from Michael Caine’s exquisite restaurant Abode overlooking the splendour of Exeter Cathedral to the highly popular Hub Box where you may have to be patient for your table, but we can tell you its well worth the wait!
Enjoy the forest at Haldon, a short drive from Exeter, great for exploring and cycling. Those with a taste for adventure and a head for heights must try GoApe where you can climb and swing through the treetops along zip wires and ropes. You will be exhausted afterwards as it can take up to 3 hours but it’s an experience you’ll never forget!
For the more leisurely explorer, visit The Blackdown Hills of East Devon, an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty that offers tranquil peaceful escapism, and can be explored along designated routes on foot, two wheels or on horseback. For lovers of nature and the great outdoors, Escot is a wonderful day out and truly one not to miss. A refreshingly un-commercial experience you can enjoy the world-class maze, bird of prey displays, otters, a saxon village and woodland play areas, and there is even an indoor playbarn if the heavens decide to open. Another great family day out, especially if the British weather is being a little unpredictable, is Crealy Adventure Park. At Clyst St Mary the all year round attraction has a huge indoor play area and has lots of outdoor fun for when the sun does decide to shine.
Of course a visit to East Devon would be incomplete without visiting the beautiful seaside resorts on the Jurassic Coast, where you will find brightly coloured deckchairs positioned overlooking the sea. Where better to enjoy a local Devon cream tea – that’s scone, a dollop of clotted cream topped off with jam!
For fans of TV chef Hugh Fernley Whittingstall’s River Cottage, the East Devon region around Axminster, Beer and Lyme Regis are where much of the TV series have been filmed. The very first River Cottage Canteen is located in the town of Axminster, they serve excellent food but the restaurant is incredibly busy in the summer months so book in advance before you arrive. Just 2 miles down the road Home Farm where you will find River Cottage HQ and where the team offer courses on bread-making, butchery and much more to hone your cookery skills. Whilst on the subject of TV series, just over the border in Dorset is where much of Broadchurch is filmed. Visit the seaside resort of Westbay just outside of Bridport, a beautiful area of the Jurassic Coast and only a half hours car journey from Honiton.
